Prince William's godfather's mansion sold: £6m north London property near billionaire's row was once home to the last King of Greece
A north London mansion once home to Prince William’s godfather, the last King of Greece, has sold for over £6 million during lockdown.
King Constantine II bought the 13-bedroom, 10-bathroom Arts and Crafts house for £325,000 after he was forced into exile by the “Colonel’s coup” in 1967.
The King, who is a second cousin and friend of Prince Charles, lived in the property on Linnell Drive near the Bishops Avenue, north London’s ‘billionaire’s row’, for 46 years with his wife, Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark, and their five children.
The 9,500sq ft mansion overlooks the Hampstead Heath Extension and has a 0.8 acre garden and a swimming pool.
Princess Diana was a frequent visitor to the house in the Nineties and would drive Prince William and Harry to parties at the house in her convertible sports car, according to Trevor Abrahmsohn of Glentree International, the agency that handled the sale.
He said: “Hampstead Garden Suburb has been the residential Velcro for the great, the good (and not-so-good), minor royalty, ‘slebs’ and titans of industry for over 50 years."
The “King of the Hellenes” sold the house in 2013 for £9.8 million in 2013 and, at the height of the country’s economic crisis, returned to Greece where, now 80, he lives as a non-royal.
The house was put back on the market in 2015 with planning permission to almost double its size for £11 million but failed to sell until this spring.
